Surprisingly large vegetarian menu. Great tasting eggplant.

Some of the best Chinese food in the area! Love it! Highly recommend! Their egg drop soup is by far the best I have ever had! Everyone there is always super friendly and helpful! Can't speak to authenticity, but if you like Americanized Chinese food, this is a great choice!

This is my go-to Chinese restaurant for take out! I love their chicken and broccoli with their brown sauce and brown rice. It's delicious! The man who answers the phone and greets you at the counter is very friendly also.

Just a typical Chinese restaurant with "okay" food to fill the belly. The orange chicken was okay, my biggest complaint was the quality of the chicken. The egg foo young was good, but the sauce needed some improvement.

Yesterday was my first time to this establishment and I was quite pleasantly surprised. I went because I saw on their website that they have an all vegetarian section on their menu, with classic chinese american dishes in mock meats such as general tso faux chicken and orange faux beef. The general tso was very good, and much better than Red Star in Dearborn (who also serves mock meats but not as good). We also ordered the asparagus faux chicken, which was a little bland, but still ok. The servers were friendly and very aware of the vegetarianism idea which is nice. Also I noticed that the manager (or was she the owner?) was cleaning and wiping counter tops when she wasn't busy. It's definitely nice to see a Chinese restaurant that is actually clean. I was happy with this place and will probably go back or visit its other locations.

I just recently became a vegetarian and decided to look for restaurants with vegetarian options. This was one of the very few I found in my area. I decided to try one of their fake chicken options so I opted for the General Tso's Vegetarian Chicken. I also got some vegetable fried rice and the ficken came with a veggie spring roll and brown rice. I actually very much enjoyed the spring roll since I miss eating egg rolls, I dipped it in the duck sauce provided. The vegetable fried rice was the only thing lacking it had those generic veggies from the veggall cans, no fresh veggies in the rice which was disappointing. The general tso's chicken was so good at first I thought maybe they messed up and gave me real chicken. Then I remembered chicken doesn't come in little sheets of meat so it must be fake. It was so good I ate myself silly. My only complaint was it was about 90% fake meat 10% broccoli which made me sad because I lovvve broccoli. Overall surprisingly good but only big issue is the price which is 12.50 just for the chicken (brown rice and spring roll)... I will definitely get it though once in a while as a nice variety to my diet.

A little pricier than most. Combos come with soup and it's NASTY. Please keep your damn soup!

I recently moved to the area and after work, I was too tired to cook and decided to order Chinese takeout. I thought I hit the jackpot because Szechuan Empire is not only really close to my house, it had pretty decent reviews. Wow, I was disappointed. I called for takeout, the phone rang until I almost was going to hang up and then I got through. I ordered the crab rangoons and the Homestyle Beef. It was ready in 15 minutes which was reasonable. It cost me $19 for just those two things which is a bit steep. But I'm willing to pay if the food is good. I ate the crab rangoons first. The thing that struck me immediately was how small they were. They were kind of pitiful and barely had any filling. I'd say some of the worst rangoons I've ever eaten. On to the Homestyle Beef. They come in those cheap little paper cartons and the size of the entrée is pretty small for the price I paid. One serving was about half of the carton so I could definitely eat the whole thing in one sitting, which is disappointing as most times, Chinese places give you tons of food. There was a decent amount of beef mixed in with the veggies but it was so tasteless. Literally the most tasteless Chinese food ever. It was supposed to be spicy and I didn't taste a damn thing. Not only that, but I didn't taste any flavor at all. I will not be returning.

The food was horrible. Two stars is being generous. It was overpriced and a complete let down. The spring roll was okay, the brown rice was edible, but the actual entrees were gross. I will never go back.

  • Gerard F.

Yuck Got a horrible wait staff. Mean is the only word, big chip on shoulder. Hot and sour soup was ok . Great tea but no coffee or deserts. Wife got the almond chicken that was over breaded. I got the siricha chicken special that had too Much vinegar and chicken was so gamey that it was not edible.

The BEST vegetarian "meat" food I've had outside California. Their General Tso's "chicken" is soooo good. Just make sure before you leave (take-out) that they have you enough. On multiple occasions they skimped and I had to complain. I give 4 stars because it's so delicious. The Livonia location is just as good.

This is my favorite Chinese food in the area by far, the sesame beef is amazing, so is the general tso's chicken. The hosts are always really nice and well informed about the menu.

When it comes to Chinese food in general, I am not a fan. I am an adventurous palate, and will eat pretty much anything, and have a hard time picking my favorite cuisine. However, I will always say Chinese is my least favorite. I think everything tastes the same and it just usually is a boring meal to me. My husband, however, would eat Chinese everyday if it weren't for the fear that he would balloon up to 400 lbs and I would become completely disgusted with him. So he typically saves his Chinese binges for during the work day when he can go with his I.T. pals to the buffet. (Stereotypical I know). Much to his surprise, I was in the mood for Chinese last week! I decided to surprise him by bringing home some take out from Szechuan Empire. (How romantic!) He used to frequent their Livonia location, so I knew this would be a big treat for him. I opted for the Orange Chicken and Wonton Soup, and a pint of Veggie Fried Rice. I was tempted to get one of their "Vegetarian Chicken" options but was a little weirded out by the thought- what exactly is this vegetarian/fake chicken they speak of?! Anyways, the food was great. Service was super fast - ready in about 10 minutes. Everything was really good! The fried rice was super moist and the veggies were chunky and FRESH! The orange chicken could have been spicier, but did not taste too fried like some of the other orange chickens I've had. The Wonton soup was also spot on - not too salty and the wonton's were shrimpless! A big plus in my book since I am allergic to shrimp. The deep fried crisps they served with the soup were totally worth every calorie. Hubby admitted - it was one of his best culinary days ever - he had stopped at the buffet for lunch that day - and still - enjoyed every last bite of Szechaun that night!

Szechuan Empire is worth the ridiculous drive out to Commerce. What, with Sharaku and Hanzo a short drive away, this is such a great food corridor out here. The food? It is good, sitdown American Chinese, and Szechuan, food. I had a selection from the fake chicken menu, the Szechuan vegetarian chicken, which was very good (although a bit sweet), and is even better with extra Broccoli. Any selection from the vegetarianized part of the menu comes with brown rice and a spring roll. Another time, I ordered he home style bean curd. I loved the spice and the mushrooms included with the veggies. The tofu was fried to near perfection. There is a decent wine list, but they were out of the wine I wanted, and they were very surprised that we asked for a wine list. Service is quick. S.E. is quickly becoming my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Northwest.

Pleasant Chinese restaurant in a strip mall. Good food. Nice ambiance. I had the Mushu Pork and Won Ton soup. Delish. The portions were huge. One entree could easily be shared by two people. Gordon Ramsey would say "No no! Make those plates smaller. No one should be taking a doggie bag home." (And he would some how drop an F bomb in there some how). I recommend this place.

I was so excited to try this place hoping that it would be a solid contender for the best General Tso's in the area provided it's big sister, Szechuan Empire South, has taken first place in my search for the best Tso's around town. Sadly it wasn't nearly as good as its flagship location in Livonia. I ordered the Tso's lunch combo with a spring roll, Hot and Sour soup and veggie fried rice. The soup came up within seconds and shortly thereafter my entrée. Needless to say I felt a little rushed even for a Chinese restaurant. I will say that it was a much closer attempt than what I found at the previous third place spot held by Hong Hua. The color of the Tso's was on point and there was no broccoli to be found...off to a good start, but the flavor was overpowered by ginger and the heat wasn't even close to offering a tear to my eye. I really did want it "as hot as they could make it"! Additionally, they boast a healthier menu here and I think the chicken may have only been sautéed and not deep fried leaving it without that crunch that makes for really great General's. The spring roll was nice though, with cabbage and a crispy shell served alongside both the plum sauce and a great spicy Chinese mustard. And I also liked the veggie fried rice, but the Hot and Sour soup isn't on my list to try again. That said I should have stuck to what I love and tried the Wonton soup instead. All in all not a bad spot for a tasty and uber quick lunch. The location is in a strip mall and the actual ambiance is pretty plain but service was fast and friendly, and the bill was minimal. Long story short if you want the third best Tso's in the area, you'll find it here but if you're from this side of town and you want the best Tso's you'll need to venture to Szechuan Empire South for a real treat.

Had the General's chicken ordered spicy. It was very good and had a nice kick. Very tasty Chinese food and I would rate as one of the better ones I have tried in the area.

This is a great place if you like General's Chicken. They make it with white chicken meat that has a crispy coating on it with a spicy sweet red sauce and dried hot pepers over broccoli. I always order no broccoli but add green onion. I have just always liked it that way. I also ask for extra spicy and it is spicy not to the point of having a bad taste but just enough to get your sweat glands going. This place has been in this location since the 90's that I know of. They did down size the restaurant. I noticed its a lot smaller but still great for dinning in. Ask for their house Chinese mustard great for the sinuses and goes well with their spring rolls.

Finally found a place near my house with good, fresh Chinese food. Went for lunch and ordered the sesame chicken lunch special. It came with a soup (I chose Won Ton), spring roll, and rice (for an extra amount I got the brown rice). The food was delicious! I ordered a soda and it came in a 20oz. bottle with a cup of ice. My meal came to about $10.50. I enjoyed my meal a lot! The chicken was perfect-just the right amount of sauce! I will return. This is located at 14 and Haggerty in the same strip mall as Panera (2 doors down) and the Hillers. The restaurant seemed very clean. It is on the smaller side, with only tables-no booths. But, very comfortable inside.

We decided to drive the extra mile to get takeout from here after watching an instructional video on YouTube done by the chef of this place. Still looking for non-fancy takeout Chinese to fill our China Star craving from Downriver. Must say it was a fail. The flavor was quite good on everything, but for the price, no vegetables were really present in any of our meals...China Star always included tons of fresh crisp vegetables (broccoli, carrots, cabbage, lettuce, pea pods, etc) with most of their entrees. We got the usual Crispy Almond chicken since the video I watched was the chef instructing how to make this dish. Albeit, the drive back to our hometown was about 20 minutes, the batter was pretty soggy and the almost non-existent lettuce below it was wilted, brown and greasy - far from the enticing entree created on the video. The fried rice that came with the dish had no veggies. Guess we were spoiled before by the added bonus of onions, carrots and peas. The beef lo main flavor was good, but once again, no true colorful veggies except for a mushroom here and there and that dreaded bamboo shoots I always hate so much. The egg drop soup was good, but your standard fluorescent yellow soup that you usually get at Chinese takeout places. Wasn't expecting much anyhow with this. I was initially excited by the egg roll as it came with the same type crispy wrapper my mom uses for hers rather than the thick puffy Americanized type, but the innards were pretty much the same standard oily cabbage/bean sprout filling. So all in all, the flavors were good, it's just the execution of the dishes and lack of more quality veggies that make this place not worth the trip.

Just celebrated Jewmas (aka Chrismukkah) at Szechuan Empire and was very pleased. The joint was *packed*, i.e., every table taken and a long line for take-out, as well; always a good sign. The ambience was better than expected considering the location. The service was personal and friendly. My orange chicken had the perfect balance of heat and sweet. My wife's vegetarian Lo Mein must have been excellent; it may have been the largest portion of food I think I have ever seen her finish in one sitting. I'm thinking this will be a mainstay for us.

The Biggest Vegetarian Menu I have EVER seen! Great Food and the employees are so kind. Very generous portions. The BEST Chinese in TOWN!!!

This place has great food!! It isn't the cheapest, but the quality is much better and worth the extra money. The service is fast! Placed a carry out and only waited about 5 minutes. I recommend the vegetable lo mein.

Probably some of the best Chinese food around Novi! Worth the drive and the service is great! The staff there know me when I come in they give me the usual, it's great. Usually not many people in there so it's quiet, but overall it's probably one of the best in town.

After being burned by so many mediocre local Chinese restaurants, I finally found Szechuan Empire and now it's the only place I bother with when I'm craving Chinese food. The food has always been delicious and I even adapted to spring rolls instead of egg rolls. The egg drop soup is particularly good, I always leave with a to-go order of it when I eat here. The restaurant is clean and the staff is pleasant, particularly once they begin to recognize you. One thing I've learned about Chinese food over the years: as popular as Chinese take-out is, it actually doesn't travel very well compared to some other cuisines; it's invariably much better to eat at the restaurant, so that's the only way I have it any more.

My pals Brian and Erin made the trip from Lansing to my home zone mostly to come down to visit me and take me out to lunch as I've been stuck at home with a broken ankle. I had been having serious craving for some spicy chinese food. I threw out some choices and they both lit up when i mentioned chinese. We made it over to Szechuan Empire in Commerce Twp. It was about 1230pm and we walked in and was able to sit down anywhere as we were the only customers. we all ordered from the lunch menu - my pal Brian - sweet n sour chicken, fried rice, spring roll, coca-cola. my pal Erin - sesame chicken - mild - fried rice, spring roll, coca-cola. me - chicken lomein - spicy, hot sour soup, ice tea. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. The pops were in 20oz bottles ice cold. My ice tea tasted fresh brewed. I added a little splenda and it was perfect. There really wasn't anything wrong except my food was not spicy enough. I've been in a hot spicy food kick for several months. I asked for hot sauce and the waiter brought out a bowl of some oily hot pepper sauce in a bowl. It was very very spicy and kicked up the flavor of my lomein. Brian & Erin commented on the peas in their fried rice. They liked em, I usually despise Peas in Rice. Don't know why Chinese eateries put Peas in fried rice. Other than that it was a good lunch. The Waiter - some chinese lady, seemed like she was the manager. Only other worker was a chinese guy who I assumed was a manager or owner perhaps. He mostly sat in the corner eating something green and watching tv.

I ate here last night. I have no idea how so many people have rated this place with 4 or 5 stars. The only reason they even get 2 stars from me, is for the fact that they are a Chinese restaurant that serves alcohol, and they had a decent spring roll. I ordered the almond chicken combination dinner plate. It clearly stated in the menu that it was breaded. I asked for it unbreaded, which is how they served it to me, but about half of the chicken was undercooked badly. The egg drop soup I had was bland. I barely had started eating my soup when they brought my dinner out. That's a nice sign that the food you're about to eat definitely hasn't been prepared to order. Not that I expect that from every Chinese restarurant I step into, but still. The spring roll was a nice break from an egg roll. I will say that was good. Also, they had a nice beer selection, with a bunch of Japanese beers. The service was far from adequate. All of the waitstaff sat around a table talking, and I had to flag them down for more water or for anything else I needed, including the bill. They never once came to ask how I was doing. Don't waste your time with this place. I'd take the extra 5 minutes to drive over to Ka Hing at Pontiac Trail and West Park Dr, or hell, even Boon Kai in Walled Lake. You'll get better service and a better meal.

I have been getting take-out and dining in for over 10 years. Looking for a new good Chinese place as of New Year's Eve when me and my family saw a waitress cleaning up a table by dunking the dish cloth in a used water glass, and then placing used sauces back on their setup table to be used again -- yuck!

My new FAVORITE restaurant. Vegetarian? You HAVE to try this! They have all kinds of Chinese authentic entrees made from tofu! So far I have tried General Tso Chick'n, Orange Chick'n, and Sesame Chick'n. Loved them and will go again!!!

Szechuan Empire is by far my favorite Chinese. I've eaten at all three (Livonia, Commerce Twp and Milford) locations, but I'll save the five-star rating for Lei Ting in Milford based on atmosphere alone. The food is consistently good at all locations. Everything I've tried is good, but I am a creature of habit, and I love the General Tso chicken (served differently than most places I've tried it) so much that I can't bring myself to order any of their other delicious dishes. Their spring rolls are also delightful. The Commerce Twp location recently moved one door down from their previous location, and is very nice, but I still like Milford (Lei Ting) a little better for atmosphere. For carry-out, location does not matter.

I've been spoiled by all of the good Japanese/sushi choices in Novi. I think that's why I've always been disappointed by the lack of what I consider good Chinese food in town. I know some Chinese places in Novi have gotten good reviews in the papers but it's been years since I've had Chinese in Novi worth raving about. When I heard some good reports about Szechuan Empire, I knew I would have to "cross the border" to check it out. Lucky for me, Szechuan Empire was worth the trip. I've been a couple times now and the experience has been similar enough that I think that it's typical for SE. You'll find the typical spread of options that you'll find in most Chinese restaurants. But compared to what I've found in Novi, it's a step above in preparation, flavor and quality. You won't confuse SE with the best of Detroit's Chinese restaurants but it's a solid dining experience. The only dish that's disappointed has been the hot and sour soup. I've ordered it both times I've eaten here and both times, it's been a bland imitator of what I've had elsewhere. I like a hot and sour with a kick but that was absent from what's served here. Still, it was the exception to an otherwise good meal. Service at SE is attentive. But both times I've eaten here, the kitchen has struggled to keep up with the dinner-time crowd. When the food finally arrived, it was freshly prepared. But if you're hungry, order an appetizer or soup to tide you over. SE is located in a strip mall at 14 Mile and Haggerty so it's easy to reach and there's always plenty of parking out front.

I don't think I've walked out after a meal before and just said... Meh. I hit up the empire because I'm working around the corner from it, and I'm looking for a good Chinese place to eat at. So I yelped it, and away I went. I came in for lunch, was immediately seated, and then... I waited. Maybe 5 minutes or so, but a while before I was even acknowledged sitting at a table. The waitress asked if I needed to see a menu, and I replied yes. She promptly got me one, and returned with my drink order. I was looking at the lunch menu, and could not find my normal go to dish, Gai Kow. (Chicken with veggies) I didn't get a chance to look at the menu to the point to see if it was there, but as she was standing there waiting to take my order, I saw General Tso's Chicken. That is always a backup dish for me, so I went for it. She returned with my won-ton soup and a spring roll. I love won-ton soup, so I went in for it. First spoonful? I was questioning if it was chicken grease water. I was tasting no flavor at all... There was no onions or greens accompanying the dumpling, and needless to say I was disappointed. I always hope for a great tasting won-ton soup to start off. Biting into the dumpling? Ugh. I almost stopped there. It was almost a doughy mess, with a overcooked texture as it pretty much turned into mush. The spring roll? Eh. I like egg rolls better... But at that point you can use soy sauce to make it taste better. The General Tso's came out and was sitting on my table... And I will say I was quite impressed on the taste of it. It wasn't breaded chicken with a ton of sauce on it, it was grilled chicken pieces with just the right amount of sauce on it. The entree saved the whole meal sucking in my opinion... And maybe I just experienced the lunch time mass production line... But I was hoping for a little bit more. Not to mention my 'fortune cookie' said,"Enjoy nature." Eh, first I want to enjoy a good Chinese restaurant.

It is no Szechuan, it is no empire! It is really bad, generic joint making "Chinese" food for Americans who don't know Chinese food. Disappointed! More to my disappointment is that the entire staff is Chinese people! How can they make such Chinese food. Advice to all Chinese restaurant owners: make real Chinese food! That's the only way you can be successful!

What a pleasant surprise! My wife & I have been traveling for the last few days... eating road food and feeling gross. So there I am on Haggerty Road just past 14 and I see a Chinese place. Totally random. I mean how bad could it be? I made a u turn and pulled into the mall. Well it was fantastic! Brilliant, delicious... fresh vegetables! I had the garlic eggplant and made a total pig of myself iot was so good. Also, wonderfull service! I was lucky to have found them... and I will be back.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
